Health Tips and Tricks for Seniors By Carrie Fillmore
|
With the Baby Boomer generation starting to reach the age of retirement, a huge portion of the population will soon be living off of Social Security and retirement funds. They will be enjoying the life of freedom, finally able to sit back, relax, and take it slow. The years of hard work will have paid off and they will finally be able to take time to do the things that they enjoy the most. It seems that this is almost a perfect paradise, right? Well, almost, but with age comes new difficulty with health issues and other disabilities that weren’t problems during youth. There are many great ways for seniors to plan ahead and take care of themselves, ensuring healthy and happy years up ahead.
One of the best things that a senior can do for him or herself is purchase Medicare supplemental insurance. Once you reach the age of 65, you are required to apply for the government funded Medicare health insurance program. This is a program that provides you with very affordable health coverage and enables you to receive health coverage without spending huge amounts of your personal money. Medicare is a good program; however there are still issues that are left uncovered and unprotected that could potentially ruin you financially should they happen to you and you be required to pay for them personally. This is where Medicare supplemental insurance comes in. This kind of insurance, also called Medigap, serves to “fill the gaps” that are left uninsured by Medicare. Medigap covers many prescription costs, surgery costs, in-home or outpatient specialty care, and many more things as well. Should you be in need of these services, Medicare supplemental insurance is a great way to save money and have them paid for.
In addition to protecting yourself with insurance, it is important that you stay active and in good shape so that you can be healthy and be around to enjoy your retirement years. One of the best ways to stay in great shape is to join a gym. Gyms have so many wonderful exercise programs that there is something for everybody. If you have never been to a gym before, you can work out with a personal trainer who will help you one-on-one each time you go to exercise. They will teach you the proper, safe ways to exercise and will make sure you are getting the most benefit from your workout. In addition, many gyms have classes that are specifically made for seniors. Some of the most popular classes include water aerobics and yoga. These classes are easy on your joints and bones and help you increase flexibility and dexterity as well as strength. Going to a gym is also a great way to meet new people and to find friends who will support you in your health and fitness goals.
Finally, do what you love. Now that you are retired from work and have extra time, take time to go outside and take a walk. Enjoy the outdoors and nature. Get moving and explore. Form a walking group with some of your friends and find a great route that enables you to avoid traffic and enjoy nature. It’s always more fun to exercise when you are with friends, and walking is a great way to move your joints and get a good cardiovascular workout. Staying heart-healthy is imperative to good health.
The most important thing to do while working to stay healthy is to make sure you are having fun. Exercise and health should make you feel better and be happy, so make sure you look forward to your workouts and that you enjoy staying in great shape.
