Is Sitting in a Sauna Good Or Bad For You? By Dobbs Franks

The Sauna
There seems to be nothing in life that someone won't find something bad or at least not good about. Certainly this applies to the lowly sauna.
Let's accept in the beginning of this discussion that extremes are not useful. In most of life it is a version of the middle ground which really makes sense.
So facing the question of whether or not a sauna is good for you we must realize that there will be those out there in the wide wonderful world who will have had a bad sauna experience.
If we consider the sauna as a well constructed place which puts out dry heat onto lovely wooden shelves where you are encouraged to lie and absorb, then all you have to do is learn how to use it to the maximum benefit for you. It may be different for you from anyone else.
I would like to begin this discussion with the premise that a sauna is in essence good for you. It can be bad for you only on two occasions.
One of these is when you abuse it and don't follow the basic rules and concepts.
The other is the much more unusual case when your physical makeup is such that excessive heat is not good for you. If this is the case then you should avoid the sauna.
However, for the rest of us here are some thoughts.
A Sauna Can Be Good For You
Those of us who benefit from a sauna approach it in several different ways. I can't speak for all sauna addicts, but I can relate my own experiences.
In the first instance I approach a sauna as a place for escape, relaxation and meditation. I don't consider the sauna normally as a social exercise. Certainly there are times when you share the experience with friends but even then it is not a social experience but rather a shared relaxation and comforting experience.
For me the best use of the sauna has nothing to do with losing weight or any of the cosmetic concepts that from time to time are put forward.
First and foremost is it a place where you can remove yourself from daily routine and in a way even leave reality.
When you are lying there sweating, relaxing, letting your muscles and body undo, losing any stress that you entered with and emptying your mind so that there is room for inspiration to enter then you are about to experience what I consider the ultimate sauna experience.
Surely total relaxation, loss of stress and emptying your mind of everything for a little while can only result in something good.
When A Sauna Is Bad For You
When you enter a sauna with a negative attitude or when you crank it up to a heat that is intolerable or when you refuse to be still, quiet and peaceful, then it can be bad for you. When you are in the sauna if anxiety, stress and tension enter then it is not going to be a good experience.
Were this to happen, exit and come back when the right atmosphere is available.
Conclusion
Obviously I believe that a sauna is a wonderful thing and can be great for you if you approach it with the right attitude.
