My 10 year Old Daughter is Dancing to What!?
From the desk of a hollywood producer…
I never realized the importance of these words until I had children of my own. my wife is a choreographer and my children have started the wonderful path of dance at a very early age. They are very fortunate because they attend Retters Academy of Dance in Los Angeles, California, which is one of the nations top dance schools.
Being at the dance studio with my children, I have heard many parents come in to the dance studio thrilled because not only are their kids getting top training but they are in an environment where the owners and teachers care about what the kids are dancing to. I took a moment to talk to a few parents that had been to several dance studios before discovering Retters. I was informed that they had left these previous studios because they would come to the end of class to pick up their child and see what their kids were dancing to. The father that I spoke to said, “My 10 year old daughter is dancing to what!?” After the studio tried to explain that the Pussycat Dolls are the hottest new thing, he quickly gathered his belongings and child and sought out a new dance school.
Now I want you to know that I am a Hollywood music producer. So I am not knocking the Pussycat Dolls. Their music is definitely hot. Most of It’s just not appropriate for a 10 year old child to be presented with in their dance school. I think that’s what is so brilliant about Disney. They have found a way to create great music and shows that are age appropriate. I know because I have written and produced music for Disney. So I asked my self, “How could I get involved in writing and producing for dance studios so that they could get the same quality as the Pussycat Dolls but with lyrics that were appropriate for kids at a dance studio.”
Well ask and you shall receive right? I was introduced to Darryl Retter who is the owner of Retters Academy of Dance. We got to talking and after connecting and realizing that many of our ideals and values were the same I discovered that he was a song writer. I asked him why he became a song writer, after all he is one of the country’s best dance teachers and choreographers. He told me that he started writing because he was tired of going to the music stores to find music for his classes only to be frustrated because the content of most of the music or the lyrics were inappropriate for children at his dance studio.
Well as they say in Hollywood, this was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. After he found out that I was a music producer and I found out that he was co-owner of a record company called Music Works Unlimited, the journey began. Musicworksunlimited.com is the nations’s only record company that writes, produces and sells age appropriate music and choreography specifically for the dance studio market.
