The Hot Dog Man Giving Advice – becoming a Coach

The Hot Dog Man
Giving advice – becoming a Coach

The HotDogMan had by now built quite a clientele of regulars and these had come to regard him as something of a Guru when it came to business matters and he had come to know them and was quick to notice when things weren't right. And to day he noticed that they weren't right with Bill.

"Hi Bill" he greeted "How's it going?" "OK! I guess" answered Bill. It's just that I had to put up with Joe again today. He is the Finance Manager, but does he have an attitude. He likes to make himself heard, he's rude and aggressive and he wants you to know that he is boss. And don't dare make a mistake or there's big trouble. I normally try to stay out of his way till he has finished ranting before I talk to him again. How do you think I should handle this?

The HotDogMan replied.
"It is a fact of life that we are going to have to deal with situations that we feel are unpleasant. What we have to realise that these situations are our opportunity to display our maturity.
Your response to the manager's behaviour is perhaps a wise one, especially if the tirade is not directed at you, or if you are not involved in the situation that he is angry about.
When ever someone behaves like this in public, especially the workplace it is a sign of immaturity and very often a sign of low self image and lack of confidence. The opportunity that you have here is to find out what it is in the situation that is causing this manager to feel threatened.

First it is important to understand that most conflict arises when one party knowingly, or unknowingly, infringes the rights of another, or when one party feels that another party has deliberately infringed his or her rights. All that has to happen here is an understanding of each participants position.
Sometimes we have to see things from the other persons point of view. Just think about this. You guys only have to put up with him. He has to put up with all of you. Before you attempt to hold him accountable for his behavior you should question whether your behavior has played a role in this situation.
What is it, particularly, that gets him upset? Is it always the same thing? What is he responsible for? How will the "mistake" affect his job? What can you do to make his job easier?

People in Management positions are often very insecure in their positions as their responsibilities are now much greater than just the work that they do, they are also held accountable for the work that others do. Tragically many people are "promoted" into management positions without being given any management training. Suddenly they have this "role" to play that they are not equipped for and this causes immense stress which is often displayed through inappropriate behavior.

So before we blame, criticize and condemn the guy let's try to understand, assist and empower him.

Just remember that you are all on the same team and ultimately it's that game that counts. Don't let personal differences interfere with your professional performance."

"Gee" said Bill. "Thanks for the advice, I never thought of it that way before. I am going to be more aware of my behaviour in future. Unfortunately I have become so used to blaming him for his bad behaviour that I don't take the time to consider that I might have a role in this. I'm going to talk to the other guys as well"

"Great" said HDM "Let me know how it goes."

End of episode 6
This is a fairly long story and will be delivered as a series so watch your inbox for the next exciting episode.

Please don't just read it. Think about it. What can you learn from it? How can you apply what you have learned? Do you have someone like the Joe in your workplace? How do you deal with their behavior? How does your behavior affect the situation? What can you do to improve the situation?

With love and best wishes
Johan
