Ways to Improve Your Poor Self Image

If you have a poor self-image, you may want to contemplate how you got one. Did someone say something to you when you were a child? Have you been carrying around a self-image that isn't yours? You probably are. It's up to you to shift your self-image. Stop believing what people say to you. Erase what everyone else thinks about you from your mind and cultivate a new self-image that works for you!

Ways to Improve Your Poor Self Image

Self-reflection. This scares most people because they don't want to face the fact they could be part of the problem and solution. Looking in the mirror isn't easy but it's the first step to cultivating a new self-image. Why and how did you get a poor self-image? How was your childhood? Did you know that 99.99% of people were wounded in some way in their childhood? They're still carrying around baggage from their childhood which is why their life isn't the way they want it. If your parents, teachers, grandparents, siblings, etc. treated you poorly and said, "You're not worthy; You're ugly; You're stupid; or You'll never amount to anything," forgive these people because they didn't realize how their words hurt worse than a punch. Remember, most parents raise their kids based on how they were raised. This isn't always a good idea.

Buy a journal or notebook and start reflecting on your life. Don't leave anything out. You'll discover where you developed a poor self-image. Once you get to the 'root' of your low self-esteem, you'll be able to shift your perspective. It's imperative to do the work; otherwise you'll always have a negative self-image.

The mirror exercise. Every day look in the mirror and say, "I love you!" Say it with feeling and mean it. Really look into your eyes and see how beautiful you are. Once you begin to love yourself, your self-image will change. If you don't love yourself, no one else will. It must come from within you.

Get a new haircut, style, and color. How long have you've been wearing your hair? If you're wearing a style from the 1980s, it may be time for a change. Purchase a couple of hair magazines or search the internet for the 'latest' hairstyles. Schedule an appointment with your hairstylist or perhaps a new one. Bring the hair magazines and or pictures so the hairstylist will have a guide. Remember, if you select a 'celebrity' hairstyle, it may or may not look good on you. Your hair's texture may not be the same. An experienced hairstylist will be able to give you an awesome new look that flatters you!

Start working out. If you're not working out, you may want to start. Exercising is a great way to boost your self-image. You'll lose weight and tone your body. You'll look and feel good!

Purchase a new wardrobe. How old is your wardrobe? Are you still wearing a look from the 1980s or 1990s? If you are, it's time to update your clothes. If you're not sure what will look good on your body, hire an image consultant. They're experts who can help you choose colors that will flatter your skin tone. They'll help you find clothes that fit your body; you may have to have some clothes tailored. A new wardrobe can do wonders for your self-image.

Meet new people, make new friends. Perhaps your friends aren't healthy for you. Are they happy? How do they carry themselves? Do they have a poor self-image? You may want to evaluate your friendships and decide if they're healthy or not. Many people don't realize how true the saying, "Birds of a feather flock together" is. It's not that you have to get rid of your friends, but it may be a good idea to think about what you like about them. How are they helping you improve your self-image? Do they want to improve their self-image? If not, this could be a problem. Once you start improving your self-image and changing, they may leave you because they're not at your level. This is all right. You can make new friends and one day, your old friends may come back into your life. Everything in life has a cycle. Embrace it and you'll be able to handle changes.

You have the power to change your self-image. If you're unhappy with your self-image, change it. Have the courage to do the 'inner' work. This will bring up a lot of emotion -- just go with it. You may be surprised what comes up. If it's too much for you to handle, you may want to speak with a counselor. Most importantly, stop listening to what people tell you! Many people who speak hurtful words are wounded. They don't know what they're saying. Try not to take it personally. Shift your self-image today, and you'll shift your life!
