Positive Attitude Music! – “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”

With this installment of the Positive Attitude Music section of the Rising Thunder Blog I pay homage to Whitney Houston; one of the greatest female voices of all time. I've always had a soft spot for Whitney being that I grew up about two miles from where she did just outside of Newark, New Jersey in the towns of East Orange and West Orange respectively.
To this day one of my many musical guilty pleasures is listening to this selection from Whitney's huge catalog of hits. In my opinion “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” is Whitney at the top of her pop dance game. Mind you this song came out about 5 years before she reached her ultimate professional peak with the Bodyguard Soundtrack from the movie she also started in with Kevin Costner.
The movie was rather forgettable but it spawned the mega hit “I Will
Always Love You” which was the ideal showcase for Whitney's nearly
perfect voice. However songs from the Bodyguard Soundtrack may have
brought people to her concerts, but it was “I Wanna Dance With
Somebody” that had her fans partying in the aisles.
In 2010 Whitney was back performing after a better than ten year hiatus. It seems from the concert reviews, video footage and news reports that her once “one in a billion” voice is gone. Whitney's admitted lengthy use of cigarettes, alcohol and drugs appears to have caught up with her and forever clogged her legendary pipes.
Many people ask what happened to Whitney. Of course I can't answer
that but I do remember one thing I heard when the newspapers were
reporting that Whitney had all kinds of addiction problems and was
married to Bobby Brown a man of known questionable character. I heard
someone in a convenience store say, “ha, this just proves you can take
the girl out of East Orange , but you can't take the East Orange out of
the girl.”
It saddened me to hear that very hopeless statement made by someone who had no other knowledge of the situation other than a headline. It wasn't true I said to myself. People don't have to be clichés. People can and do rise out of mostly negative situations to build a positive future. Individuals are capable of rising up, falling back, and than rising again higher than ever before. I know this is true. I've seen it and I believe it.
I hope that Whitney finds a way to make it happen for herself. Maybe she'll do it with music or maybe not. Yes the pristine voice is mostly gone, but the soulful person who commanded it still remains. Her path is not complete and her mission is not over.
