Blog Homepage - Positive Power How to Make New Friends at School: ****************************************** Before you can make new friends and be a True Amigo to another student, you must first make friends with yourself. This starts when you begin to become clear about what it is you honestly like, enjoy, and appreciate, without being persuaded by popular culture or peer pressure. At school, it is easier to make lots of “lukewarm friends” by riding on the popular tides than it is to follow your own gentle stream and hopefully discover a few True Amigos. True Amigos are passionate about their likes and dislikes no matter how good or bad they rank within the school's mainstream. A True Amigo lets his or her authentic character shine through, which then attracts other True Amigos. True Amigos can see right through someone who is acting fake or pretends to enjoy whatever the majority approves of. This type of person is called an Impostor Amigo, and they are the saddest sight on any campus. An Impostor Amigo is easy to spot because they always seem to be lurking nervously around the background of a social situation while smiling awkwardly because they are subconsciously waiting for someone to yell out and point, “Impostor Amigo! Look at the crowd-following Impostor Amigo!” Think About This For A Minute… Would you want to date or hang out with someone who is not passionate about how they live or what they like to do? If they are not passionate about themselves, do you think they are going to be passionate about you or what the two of you do together? Students who learn to be True Amigos by expressing their genuine likes and dislikes live happier and less anxious lives. When a student sets out to become a True Amigo, he or she does three major things… Joins clubs, organizations or sports teams that they have a natural talent or desire for, no matter what the popular opinion may be. Openly expresses their political, artistic, and social likes and dislikes without fear of losing friends. Listens to their favorite music and wears their ideal style of fashion proudly without having to hide or apologize for it. The greatest thing about becoming a True Amigo is that as soon as you become one, other True Amigos will see your authentic efforts and will be excited to get to know another one of their own. * How To Make New Friends At School – Action Step * Stare deep at your face in the mirror. Are you a True Amigo? If you have the slightest urge to look away quickly, you are probably not a True Amigo yet. However, do not worry.
